CAKES AND BISCUITS ARE THE TOP SWEET TREATS BRITS ARE LIKELY TO BAKE OVER THE EASTER WEEKEND

Nearly half of Brits (43%) love to bake over the Easter period – with 67% likely to whip up a cake for the occasion, while 32% will have a go at making biscuits.

A quarter of wannabe pâtissiers will also attempt a batch of scones (25%) or muffins (24%) this coming weekend, while brownies are a popular choice for 30%.

And the survey of 2,000 adults found that 39% are left feeling nostalgic when they are in the kitchen baking over Easter – as four in 10 say this forms the basis of some of their favourite childhood memories.

However, while as many as 23 million Brits (44% of those polled) are set to whip up a sweet treat this Easter, creating a whopping 66 million bakes, nationwide – not all of these will be edible.

In fact, four in 10 admit their culinary creations will be destined for the bin – as 32% have previously baked goodies not suitable to serve to guests.

Nearly half (45%) admit their skills in the kitchen leave a lot to be desired, with 28% having burnt a recipe to a crisp, while 19% have dropped the finished product on the floor – and 9% have even confused the sugar with salt.

The research was commissioned by Maltesers, which has launched the “Easter Hop-line” – an emergency delivery service that sends Maltesers Bunnies out to cover up any baking imperfections.

Florence Kayll, “head of Easter” for the chocolate company, said: “Easter has become the busiest time of year for bakers – and we all know pulling off the perfect bake isn’t as easy as they make it look on social media.”

It also emerged many have gone to great lengths to salvage their baking disasters, with 38% shaving off the burnt bits. And 37% have attempted to hide an imperfection with icing, while three in 10 resorted to serving themselves the ugliest slice.

Getting distracted (23%) is the top excuse for these mishaps – along with misreading recipes (20%), and overestimating their own abilities (18%).

However, while the bakes aren't always perfect, nearly half (48%) reckon it’s a good activity to get the family together at Easter – with the average budding home baker having four recipes in their repertoire.

Anyone in need of the Easter Hop-line in London, Cardiff, and Edinburgh, can call 0800-5335-HOP (0800 5335 467) this Saturday, March 30, for help with their bakes.
